There is an interesting thread regarding ergonomy of software configuration in Debian: When there is a sensible default, should we ask the question if the setting is hard to reach for a newbie?
The basic arguments is that such a question is not of critical importance and should then get a low priority. However, people that used to see the low priority stuff is also people that doesn't need to have this kind of helper. Personnaly, I think that Debconf should have used Expertise levels instead of priority. Some questions would have been for beginners and other for experts (and some for both). But changing every debconf templates to use such thing is a big project already.
